The Junior Academy Presentation Evening

More than 50 juniors and parents celebrated the excellent achievements of our young golfers over the year. Big winners on the night were Seán Hayes and Lucie Strnadová who were rewarded for their Outstanding Achievements over the year, while Matan Michaels won the Junior of the Year prize.

No MHGC report in 2017 is complete without a picture of men’s Captain, Phil Matthews, so here he is with the incoming Junior Captain, Alex Barnham presenting James Wong with his medal for Excellent Progress. Well done James and all the other winners.

Many thanks to coaches, Samantha Kang, David Kavanagh, Noreen Mullins and Bill Carey, the chairman, David Edwards, the Captains, David Wilton, Magda Nawrocka and her team, David Lynch and the kitchen staff and especially to Seb Frankiss for making it such a successful evening.

The Sabbath Club Challenge 2017

On the 27 November 2017, some intrepid members played hickory golf and some even donned period attire to celebrate the centenary of the abolition of local rule 13, which prevented golf on Sundays. A belief that seems inconceivable today. In 1917, after 24 years this rule was relaxed to enable the troops a bit more R&R prior to returning to the front. It was finally abolished on the 27 November 1920. The Sabbath club was a ruse, developed by the canny Scots. It posed as a walking stick but could be used as a golf club when no one was looking.

The weather was kind and early rain soon cleared. The sun even showed its face. The attendance was good and the guests included three scratch golfers and a professional from Brancaster, Joe Oldfield.

The medal prize was won by a current England Seniors player and past Scots and Irish Seniors Champion, Richard Partridge (Wildernesse GC), with a gross 74. The men’s stableford prize was won by Jo Smith Junior (The Berkshire) with 34 points. The ladies stableford was won by Claire Johnson (formerly MHGC but now at Wildernesse GC) with 29 points.

The participants enjoyed the interesting experience, and the next hickory event is scheduled for Friday 26 October 2018.
